JAMES B. WEST JR. was a well-known plumbing contractor in Camden in the 1910s,and remained active as a plumber into the late 1950s. James B. West was born in Missouri in 1885. On April 27, 1911 he married Margaret Oberst, daughter of prominent real estate operator Anthony J. Oberst. The couple first made their home at 448 Pine Street. At the time of the 1920 Census they lived at 446 Pine Street in Camden, next door to his business, which was at 444 Pine. The West family at that point included wife Margaret, son James J. West, aged 8, and daughter Carolina, aged 4. By the fall of 1936 the Wests were at 700 Spruce, according to the New Jersey Bell Telephone Directory of that year. James B. West Jr. was living at 707 Spruce Street as late as 1947. The 1956 Telephone Directory shows him at 826 Kimber Street in North Camden, and he was there as late as 1959. He died at home on October 3, 1961, survived by a daughter, Caroline Ann West, and a sister, Mrs. Myrtle M. McClyment. He had been a member of Camden Lodge No. 293, Benevolent Protective Order of Elks. |
