STAFF SERGEANT HERBERT GOLDBERG was born on March 17, 1922 to Jack and Sarah Goldberg. In 1923 his parents opened up a general store on Evesham Road in the Ashland neighborhood that lies partly in Voorhees Township and partly in what was then called Delaware Township, now known as Cherry Hill. The Goldberg family lived in a house on Ellis Street, in Delaware Township. Herbert Goldberg was a 1942 graduate of Haddonfield Memorial High School in Haddonfield NJ, where he played on the football team for four years. Prior to enlisting in the Army, Herbert Goldberg had worked at the Philadelphia Navy Yard.

After being inducted into the United States Army on October 23, 1942, Herbert Goldberg advanced to the rank of Staff Sergeant. He went overseas in August of 1944. While serving with the 133rd Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division in Italy, Herbert Goldberg was killed on October 23, 1944 in an attack against stiff opposition to secure finally the high ground northwest of San Angelo D'Alife. 

After the war, the body of Herbert Goldberg was returned to the United States. He is buried at Crescent Burial Park in Pennsauken NJ. The library at temple Beth Sholom synagogue was named in his memory on October 28, 1945.
