TECHNICIAN FOURTH CLASS WALTER D. HANSEN was born in 1915, the youngest of four sons of Hans and Helen Hansen, coming after William, Harry, and Robert. In 1930 the Hansen family lived on Chestnut Avenue in Runnemede NJ. Hans Hansen was a native of Denmark who came to America in 1905. He worked as a machinist at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. Walter Hansen had attended high school for four years before entering the service. He was inducted into the Army at Trenton NJ on June 2, 1941. He was serving at Camp Croft SC with an infantry unit in July of 1943.

Walter D. Hansen was killed in action on February 13, 1945 near Saarlautern, Germany. Brought home in the fall of 1948, he was buried locally in a private service on December 16, 1948. He was survived by his wife, M. Isabel Hansen and daughter Carol, of 39 Lindisfarne Avenue, Westmont NJ. He also was survived by his parents, of Runnemede, and his brothers Robert and Harry..
