Sergeant First Class Brittin was a member of Company I, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division. He was seriously wounded by the enemy in North Korea on November 6, 1950 and returned to duty on December 15, 1950. On March 7, 1951, while leading his squad on an attack near Yonggong-ni, South Korea, he wounded by an enemy grenade. He refused medical aid and continued to lead the attack, throwing grenades and firing his rifle. By the time he was killed from automatic weapons fire he had killed 20 enemy soldiers. For his leadership and great valor, Sergeant First Class Brittin was awarded the Medal of Honor and the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster.
