October 15, 2014

WWW.DVRBS.COM has been up and running for over 12 years, and will continue to remain "live" on the Internet.

In the summer of 2014 I established a second home in North Dakota, with the intent of making this my permanent home by the end of 2017. I will be spending more and more time out west than in New Jersey during this period. During the summer of 2014 a friend hosted the site on his server until I could get things up and running out west.

1> I HAVE registered the domain name through January of 2016.

2> During the spring and summer of 2014 not a whole lot of new pages were created and not a lot existing pages were updated, as I was quite involved in setting up out west. As of September 30, 2014 everything is up and running and I will be catching up on e-mails, information and images sent to me, information requests, and all sorts of other things. Winters are long and cold out here in North Dakota... no worries, I have A LOT to keep me busy inside, health permitting.

3> On October 2, 2014 the server was hacked. Due to the fact that no software vendor of worth is still supporting Windows 2000, I am forced to replace the server with a new one, which, after all is said and done, is going to cost me about $3000, At this point in time, what with the move, I'm pretty well tapped out. I really need some financial help here. Thanks much.

While monetary donations have always been accepted, I rarely have solicited them. Beginning in January, 2013 the expense of operating the www.dvrbs.com comes out of my own pocket. For that reason, I am asking that if you can, please make a donation in any amount to the site. Please mail all donations to PO Box 2792, Bismarck ND 58502-2792.

* * OLD NEWS * *
A Bit of DVRBS History!

This website was founded in the fall of 2002. DVRBS, Inc. operated as a registered 501(c)3 non-profit through the end of 2012. As the time and money involved in administrating the corporation became problematic, it was decided to dissolve DVRBS, Inc. in December of 2012.

NOVEMBER 2012... As of November 2012 our server is over 10 years old.... well, so far so good, outside of a power supply crapping out a few years ago it has run faithfully. On the other hand, this site does not have a lot of video or audio content, so their is not a lot to slow it down. Someday if the money fairy comes through, we will get a new server!

JULY 2013... I took my first vacation in 11 years, leaving for a road trip on May 21 for points as far west as Wyoming. Murphy's Law going into effect, the server crapped out on May 22. There was little I could do from the road, and the site was off-line until I got home in mid-July. The site went live again, using my backup server, on July 17.

AUGUST 2013... The server was rebuilt with new hard drives and a used motherboard and processor and went back into service on August 30. I will have to rebuild again at some point, and when I do I will also have to update the operating system. The site runs on Windows 2000 Pro, which has been a very stable platform, but is 14 years old, and worse yet, no longer supported by Microsoft. Updating the OS will be necessary as no one is manufacturing new motherboards that will run with Windows 2000, so the next rebuild will be at minimum, new OS, motherboards, processor, and memory, and most likely new hard drives as well. Oh well, forewarned is forearmed, and the saving for this problem starts now.

OCTOBER 2013... It IS pretty much assured... as in 99% probability... that I will be moving out of New Jersey before the end of the year. There will be a new mailing address and probably a new e-mail address, so if you have a moment, please drop me an e-mail so I can make certain that you get the new one when it changes. A LOT of pages have the e-mail address on it, and changing every link will take a lot of time... the old address will probably be on the website in one place or another long after the change goes into effect, and e-mails sent to it will go undelivered. I will have to have to change the e-mail address on literally a couple of thousand web-pages, as I said last week, a BIG pain in the rear, but probably unavoidable.

NOVEMBER 2013... The 1% kicked in and I will be staying in New Jersey until the spring. I will take the next 6-8 weeks and do a necessary reorganization of the website. PLEASE REPORT ALL BROKEN LINKS TO ME BY E-MAIL. You WILL run into a bunch of them for awhile. Sorry for any inconvenience. If you cannot find what you are looking for, ask me, and I will send you the new link.

STILL RELEVANT: At $35.00 each, the rolls of microfilm contain one month of post-1920 Camden newspapers, the Post-Telegram in the years through 1926, the Morning Post and Evening Courier beginning in 1930, and in the late 1940s the combined Courier-Post.

Donations can still be made toward for the newly acquired scanner, or can be directed to the month and year of Camden newspapers of your choice, as long as they are available through the New Jersey State archives. I'm also looking to upgrade to a new server before the end of 2009, as the one we are on now is in its sixth year of use.

Once again, for all the millionaires reading this, DVRBS Inc. is a registered 501c3 non-profit organization and  tax-deductible donations can be made by check or money order.

To donate by check or money order, make them payable to Phil Cohen, and mail to PO Box 2792, Bismarck ND, 58502.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP

February 19, 2006

On February 19, 2006 I completed a 4 week long project of reorganizing the website. If I told you that this has taken almost every non-day job hour since January 24th, I would not be all that far from the truth.... my dogs are looking at me with great impatience in their eyes!

As the site had to be split into a number of sub-webs to make editing and updating more feasible, I literally had to go page by page to check that links between pages in different sub-webs would work. Hopefully I got them all. Of course links to other web-sites are beyond control, but the stuff within www.dvrbs.com should all be working.

GOOD NEWS!

I was loaned the contents of a recently discovered "time capsule" that was buried in June of 1858 at the corner of Fifth and Federal. I've scanned a lot of it, and a web page will be visible tomorrow morning. I also was able to acquire THREE Camden City Directories, from 1906, 1914, and 1924, at the Camden County Historical Society used book sale yesterday.

I met a retired homicide investigator who told me about this case.... the only unsolved murder case in his career. This being a public service oriented web site, I thought it only appropriate to see if the www.dvrbs.com community could step up and perhaps help in this matter.

October 4-5-6, 2006

The DVRBS.COM server crashed Wednesday morning. I had to get a back-up server up to speed, which was accomplished late Thursday night. At that point I made arrangements to switch to the new IP address.... for those of you who are not technically inclined, the address http://69.249.9.253 which is found when you type in www.dvrbs.com. This switch should kick in late tonight, Friday, October 6, 2006 My apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused, this was beyond my control.

A little catch-up news, as I've been busy with family and work issues for much of the last six months. During this time I have not been updating the site as often as I had in previous years. However, things are starting to settle down a bit, and and I should be back on the good foot next month.

Good News- The Nick Parisi Memorial Scholarship Fund raised over $9200 at last weeks Fun Day in Bellmawr.

More Good News- With your help, I've replaced the workstation where I edit the website. It took a few days to transfer everything from one computer to the new one, but it's done. The server will be next.

Bad News- I'm having trouble with my network. I've a good work-around, but I really need to re-set the whole thing once I replace the server.

A GOOD IDEA- When you visit the "neighborhoods" pages, like the ones for North Camden, Cramer Hill, and East Camden- be sure to look for the stories that people have e-mailed in. I have saved just about EVERY e-mail sent to me over the last few years with pictures, stories and info to post on the site.... some I've gotten to, others I really need to go back through and get posted. Sooner or later... hopefully sooner, I will! Thanks to John Stires for suggesting that I remind everyone about this.

Martin W. Baskow owned and operated the Nine-Thirty-Nine Bar at 939 Market Street in Camden NJ in the 1960s. He was brutally murdered in his bar on the morning of July 14, 1967. This case remains unsolved, 39 years later. If you have any information concerning this crime, please e-mail me. Your identity will be kept confidential and there is a reward for information leading to an arrest.

"Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Understanding is not enough; we must do.
Knowing and understanding in action make for honor.
And honor is the heart of wisdom."
Johann von Goethe

No man owns history, therefore you should feel free to use anything in this web site for any purpose you see fit. The only important thing is that knowledge be preserved, made accessible,  and passed down to future generations. This site is not for profit and proud of it, for to claim title to and profit from the actions of those long gone seems to, at best, bogus, and at worst, immoral. If left to the greedy, there would be no public domain- Constitution and the Bible would be the property of an individual, institution, or corporation. -- Phil Cohen.
