SECOND LIEUTENANT STEPHEN WALTER YOUNG was born December 20, 1945 to Walter and Jane Young. Walter Young's occupation was as a lithographer with Levering-Riebel Company, Printers and Lithographers, of Camden, New Jersey. He was an Elder and Deacon of the Collingswood Presbyterian Church. He was also a tax assessor for the Borough of Collingswood. Jane Young served on the Parent Teacher Association in Collingswood, and for 15 years was treasurer of the Board of National Missions, United Presbyterian Church. The family lived at 325 West Franklin Avenue is lived in West Collingswood, New Jersey. Steven Young graduated from Collingswood High School in 1963 and Bowling Green University four years later. Joining the Army, he graduated from Officers Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia in 1968. His MOS was Infantry Unit Commander (Army). Second Lieutenant Young began his tour of duty in Vietnam on August 7, 1969. Assigned to a mobile advisory team, he was killed in action 30 days later, on September 6, 1969 in Chuong Thien, South Vietnam, a victim of small arms fire. He was survived by his parents and an older sister, Mrs. Carolyn Scott. |

SOLDIER KILLED IN ACTION IN MEKONG DELTA An Army second lieutenant from Collingswood, N.J., who had been in Vietnam for five weeks, has been killed in action, the Defense Department reported Friday. Lieutenant Stephen W. Young, 23, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Young, of 325 West Franklin Avenue, was killed while on duty in the Mekong Delta. He graduated from Collingswood High School in 1963 and Bowling Green State University of Ohio in 1967. Lieutenant Young enlisted in Ohio in 1967 and went into the service in January 1968. He was graduated from officers candidate school in November 1968 and was sent to Vietnam August 7, where he was assigned to a mobile advisory team. His father said he sent the family a letter saying he had been told to learn the Vietnamese language and religious customs in two weeks. Surviving with his parents is a sister, Mrs. Carolyn J. Scott. |
