Mummers: THE CAMDEN CLOWNS
The Mummer's Day Parade at New Years may be a Philadelphia Tradition, but Camden has sent a few Mummers units across the bridge over the years. The photo below was taken on January 1, 1928, at the Home for Friendless Children at 915 Haddon Avenue, a site occupied in recent times by the Salvation Army. The Clowns entertained the children there after returning from the Philadelphia parade, turning in what I can only imagine as a very "well-oiled" performance, Prohibition not withstanding! |

Camden Clowns, descendants of King Momus, making merry at the Home for Friendless Children, Haddon Avenue, yesterday afternoon after they had participated in the Mummer’s Day Parade in Philadelphia. In the foreground is a float depicting an “Ex-Sub Chaser.” Surrounding this are ‘navy’ men in small boats on which are painted the words “hard to catch with these small hooks”. This feature of the Camden parade was a “slam” of the Navy for its failure to rescue the S-4. In the background clowns are “strutting their stuff” to thrill the 70 children of the home. |
