Haddon
Avenue

Haddon Avenue is one of the oldest roads in Camden, dating back to at least 1792 when it became basically a bridle path. The road was gravelled in the early 1820s. In 1839 an act of the New Jersey Legislature enabled the incorporation of the Haddonfield & Camden Turnpike Company. This road was finished in 1847. It was a toll road for many years. In Camden, Haddon Avenue runs southeast from 592 Federal Street to the city limits in the direction of Collingswood, Haddon Township, and Haddonfield.

Do you have an Haddon Avenue or picture. Let me know by e-mail so it can be included here.

This seldom-seen picture shows the Third Regiment Armory as see from the west, along the railroad tracks and "Chinese Wall" that are now Mickle Boulevard. Haddon Avenue can be seen at the rear, coming out from under the wall and passing behind the station. The rear of the train appears to have just crossed Mickle Street, which passed directly in from the Armory, which, as stated above, was renamed Convention Hall in the 1950s.

2 BROTHERS AND PAL GET ROBBERY TERMS
Implicated in Series of Gas Station Thefts; Leniency Pleas Fails

Two Camden brothers and a pal they implicated in a series of gasoline station robberies over a four month period were sentenced to prison yesterday by Judge Baldwin in Criminal Court.

Despite pleas for leniency on grounds that they are the fathers of small children, Howard Jones, 32, of 419 Haddon Avenue, and his brother, Edward, 43, of 537 York Street, were sentenced to two to five years and one and a half years, respectively.

Frederick Hammell, 33, of Linden Avenue, Woodlynne, whom they implicated in their confession to Merchantville police last December, was sentenced to four to seven years. When Hammell has finished his term in New Jersey he will be returned to Pennsylvania, where he is charged with breaking his parole,

Alertness of a Merchantville policeman, Herbert A. Davidson, Jr., and Special Officer Harry Collins, attached to the Merchantville department, resulted in the first arrest. With the aid of Police Chief William Linderman, they "broke" the bandit trio.

One of the alleged "jobs" with which the three were connected was the spectacular kidnapping of four gasoline station attendants and a. taxi driver last September 17. The attendants were robbed at gunpoint and then forced into the taxicab from which they witnessed addition al holdups.

Later more than a dozen other holdup victims identified the three as the men who held them up.

Chief Thorpe maintained that Hammell was the "brains" of the group. He declared that at least 16 holdups had been definitely linked to the three men.

It was brought out in testimony after the three entered a plea of non vult that Howard Jones is the father of a three-weeks-old baby and six other children. Edward, it was shown, is the father of three children. The wives of Edward and Howard were in court to bolster the leniency pleas.

"It was the lure of easy money that beckoned these men on," said Judge Baldwin in pronouncing sentence.

WIFE’S PAIN IN NECK WINS DIVORCE PLEA
Husband Used Her as Human Ashtray;
She Tells Court in Burning Recitals

A Camden city employee was accused yesterday, of snuffing out a cigarette by pressing it against the back of his wife's neck.

Testimony to this effect won recommendation for a divorce for Mrs. Lillian T. Joyce of 201 South Twelfth Street, Philadelphia, from Worthington W. Joyce of 507 Haddon Avenue, this city. Joyce is employed in the highway department.

Mrs. Joyce related a series of alleged cruelties at hearing before Advisory Master Linwood W. Erickson in Camden Chancery Court. The case was not contested.

The Joyces were married March 3, 1925, in an elopement to Maryland, and separated last May, 1937, she testified. They have a son, 11.

Mrs. Joyce testified she was ordered to "get out" by her husband several times and that he frequently showed violent anger.

Once, she told the court, he twisted her arm, tore open her dress and took $10 from her in the presence of a group of friends. That was at Christmas time, 1935, she testified. January 30, 1937, while returning from a ball at a hotel here, Joyce beat, her and took her purse while friends looked on, the wife said, adding that this incident took place in front of the Court House.

Mrs. Joyce showed scars on her neck to Erickson in telling of the incident when her husband snuffed out a cigarette. The wife told the court it caused her to suffer intense pain.

Four days later, last May 6, he kicked her in the stomach and pushed her down. a stairway, Mrs. Joyce testified. It was after this that she left home and went to Philadelphia to live, Mrs. Joyce said.

MAN IN ALIMONY CASE SAYS WIFE EARNS MORE

Haled into chancery court by his former wife on a charge of contempt of court in neglecting to pay alimony, Herman Saxe, 528 Haddon Avenue, testified yesterday that· his wife is employed and receives a larger wage than he does.

He was arraigned before William J. Kraft, advisory master in chancery, on complaint of Mrs. Celia Saxe, of 4917 North Ninth Street, Philadelphia. She obtained a divorce from him last July and the court ordered him to pay her $6 a week alimony. She asserted that she has not received one cent from him.

When he took the stand in his own defense, Saxe stated he works in a Camden factory for $20 a week and that his wife receives $30 at her Philadelphia place of employment. Mrs. Saxe denied this.

Kraft adjourned the hearing for two weeks to give Saxe an opportunity to obtain additional testimony, substantiating hill allegation.

Mrs. Scott Forms Junior Board for Hospital Service

Mrs. William B. Scott today announces the organization of a Junior Women's Board to the West Jersey Homeopathic Hospital.

The membership consists of the officers of the junior auxiliaries throughout this city and the suburbs. At the initial meeting on Monday evening at Mrs. Scott's home, 540 Haddon Avenue, were representatives from Camden, East Camden, Pitman and Pennsauken Merchantville auxiliaries.

The objective of the board is to more closely unite the activities of the junior groups by outlining the year's work and by discussing plans concerning hospital affairs. One result of the meeting was the decision of various auxiliaries to maintain beds' in the hospital as their annual project.

Mrs. Scott, who is president of the Senior Women's Board, is directing the activities of the Junior Board. Miss Christine Brummer, of this city, a member of the Camden auxiliary, has been appointed secretary, and Mrs. Esther C. Abbott. of Pitman, financial chairman. The Camden branch is headed by Miss Lillian Hughes, of Camden.

The board will be in charge of the dance arrangements for the annual card party and dance, held for the benefit of the hospital, on April 5. Mrs. Lillian Hughes, of this city, heads the music committee.

This is the Beginning of my Life Story
by Robert Fred Neubaum
written about 1987

When I was about 8 years old (1918), my father, who was a machinist at the Bethlehem Steel company, left this job and moved to Camden, New Jersey, to work in the shipbuilding industry because of higher wages. Not long after he went there, World War I ended, and the shipbuilding industry declined. He then worked in a small machine shop called Morton's Machine Shop until work became slack there, too.

He then purchased a store on Kaighn Avenue. It was a combination cigar, candy and ice cream store which also sold newspapers and magazines. He later moved the store to the intersection of Haddon Avenue, Mt. Ephraim Avenue and Line Street

When I finished the 7th grade in school, he asked me to come to Camden to tend the store while he went to work at an outside job, since the income from the store was not sufficient. He gave me instructions on how to arrive there: by train from Harrisburg to Philadelphia, by subway from the train station to the ferry landing, by ferry across the Delaware River to Camden, and by trolley car to the location of the store. When I arrived, my father sent me alone to a restaurant about a block away, and it was then I had my first restaurant meal. They served me soup, and I ate the soup and got up to leave. The proprietor told me that wasn't the entire meal, so I sat down and had the rest of the meal.

For the entire summer vacation I clerked in the store during the daylight hours while my father worked at a machine shop, coming home in the evening to take care of the store until it closed at 11 p.m. Each evening at 11 o'clock the telephone would ring, and a voice would say "Breyer's calling," at which time we would give our order for the various flavors of ice cream to be delivered the next day by horse and wagon.

Left: Bob Neubaum at the door to the store

The next day the ice cream would be delivered, placed in the ice cream cabinet and chopped ice poured over the cans of ice cream. This had to be stomped down with a club about the size and shape of a baseball bat to pack it around the cans to keep the ice cream from melting. Salt was also sprinkled into the ice to cause it to melt, and the ice water was colder than the ice itself…so the ice water would keep the ice cream from melting.

There were 2 telephones in the store because there were rival telephone companies--the Bell and the Keystone. The same situation existed in Harrisburg, and subscribers to one telephone system could not contact subscribers of the other.

While working in the store that summer during vacation, I acquired a camera from a punchboard in the store and took a lot of pictures on weekends when I wasn't working. I would walk to different parts of the city on Sundays and take pictures of various buildings--city hall, high school buildings, and various statues. At the end of the summer I returned to Enhaut in time to start school in the 8th grade in Oberlin.

COLLINGSWOOD MAN HURT

Suffering cuts and bruises, Kline H. William, of 2203 East Madison avenue, Collingswood, was treated at the West Jersey Homeopathic Hospital on Saturday after he was struck by an automobile at Haddon Avenue and Mt. Vernon Street.

The driver of the car, Harry Shaner, 44, of 1120 Kaighn Avenue, had no driver's license, according to Patrolman Stanley Wirtz. He was held in his own recognizance for a hearing in police court.

1179 Haddon Avenue was Huskey's luncheonette from 1949 to early 1960's. I ate there for lunch almost every day when I worked at Pep Boys. My mouth waters for one of his corn beef on rye and a bowl of cream of mushroom soup or chicken noodle and matzo balls.

Lori's Records closes amid sour retail market

By EILEEN SMITH
Courier-Post Staff

After 34 years, the tunes have stopped spinning at Lori's Records, a place where gospel soared, hip-hop got down and jazz roamed free.

Owner Dona "Joe" Lumpkin closed the wrought iron security gate, forged with a heart and the word LORI'S, for the last time on Saturday. He bought the store on Haddon Avenue in 1976 from a friend who had a wife named Lori. In those days, Lumpkin, a jazz lover, was a merchant seaman who was looking for a way to make a living on land.

"Those were great times for music around here, with the Blue Notes, Phyllis Hyman and Billy Paul," he said.
Lumpkin, trim and energetic at 72, said he would have preferred to keep working.

"But the downloading and bootlegging have ruined things for the music stores," he said.

Inside the dark, crowded gallery, glossy posters of R&B artists and rappers R. Kelly and Ne-Yo hang near a photo of Public Enemy's appearance at Lori's in the 1980s. Outside, a faded banner promoting Donnie McClurkin's spirituals is mounted above the front entry.

Steel doors cover empty storefronts on either side of Lori's, missing teeth in a neighborhood smiling with barbershops and braiding parlors, chicken joints and pizzerias, a phone store and a butcher shop.

Lumpkin is selling the store, including the apartment above it, where he lives with his wife, Linda, and 14-year-old daughter Ashley, the youngest of his four children. The price: $160,000.

For more than half a century, the property has pulsed with sound. In the 1950s, it was the home of Berul's, a purveyor of musical instruments.

Re/Max agents Norma Sellers and Eugene Alforce, who listed the property, recently showed the storefront to a church group.

"We do not expect it will remain a music store," Sellers said. "It is very difficult to make it in that business these days."

Independent retailers have long been at a disadvantage in dealing with recording companies. But Lumpkin and several owners in Philadelphia founded R.A.G.E., a music cooperative, to bolster their buying power.

"We got better pricing from the record companies," he said. "We also got help from the companies in promoting our stores."

The co-op disbanded in 2006 just as the retail market for music was turned on its ear. Instead of browsing for compact discs, music lovers were downloading tunes. Pirated recordings became widely available. Discounters such as Wal-Mart and Best Buy cut prices.

"I never could have imagined these great stores with two stories of music going down," he said. "Tower Records, Sam Goody's, all gone."

Lori's managed to hang on longer. Because he owns the store, Lumpkin was able to shave the portion of his profit margin that would have gone to rent. Collectors sought out his vintage albums and cassette tapes.

Plus, technology took longer to arrive in Camden.

"Then more people got computers -- or got friends who have computers," he said.

Destini Hill, 20, who lives around the corner from Lori's, remembers buying "College Dropout," Kanye West's first CD, at the store.

"Lori's is cheaper than Wal-Mart," she said. "And I don't have to take a bus to get to the store."

Lumpkin sold CDs for $12.98, $19.99 for a double set. When he decided to close, he cut prices 40 percent on his $90,000 inventory. He is selling whatever didn't go on his website, www.lorisrecords.com.

Nathalie Williams, 67, a crossing guard on the corner, said it is difficult to imagine the neighborhood without Lori's.
"We go back to Sam Cooke," she said.

Lumpkin still listens to the artists he admired when he opened the store: trumpet master Nat Adderley and sax virtuosos Gene Ammons and John Coltrane.

They will keep him and his family company as they travel after the sale of the property.

"As a merchant seaman, I went all around the coasts," he said. "Now, I'm looking forward to seeing the Midwest."

Child Dies From Injuries

From injuries received when she was knocked down by an automobile at Haddon and Kaighn avenues, Camden, Margaret Sampson, aged 11 years, of 1212 Haddon avenue, died in the Homeopathic Hospital yesterday. It was while crowds were going to a circus that Margaret, in company with her mother, apparently became confused and ran directly into the machine, the latter operated by Dr. E. M. Hartman, of Fleetwood, Pa. Her death was caused by internal injuries. Dr. Hartman was absolved from responsibility by the police.

SMALL SALES SPECIALTY OF BOUQUET SHOP HERE

Established but six months, The Bouquet Shop at 1405 Haddon Avenue, is doing a large volume of trade.

A new idea in flower shops, the shop makes a specialty of small orders. Although Miss Alexy, owner of the shop, does wedding and funeral work, most of her business consists of small sales for gifts, wear and home decoration.

“We handle a large variety of flowers and stock a line of novelties, both in flowers and containers," said Miss Alexy. "Flowers are displayed in and often sold with suitable vases or novelty containers. All flowers and containers are price-tagged to assist the customer. We handle only fresh cut flowers."

The George D. Weatherill
Varnish Works Fire

June 27, 1929

Billowing clouds of toxic smoke rise above the Wetherill Varnish Works, southwest corner of Haddon Avenue and the Old White Horse Pike. Three alarms were sounded to control this fire.

December 1967 - A parking lot where the George D. Weatherill Varnish Works
once stood. The Building at bottom left is 1721 Haddon Avenue, the former Haddon Motors automobile dealership. The triangular building in upper center with the garage doors belonged to Randolph Chevrolet

Intersection of Haddon Avenue & Crescent Boulevard (RToute 130)
Camden Courier-Post * July 20, 1948

Courier-Post picture taken July 20 1948 of the "underpass" being constructed . Traffic used to go from Haddon Avenue right across Rt. 130 into and out of Camden. However, after the war traffic began to increase and the light at Haddon Avenue and 130 was causing too much of a bottleneck . It was then decided that in order to fix the problem an underpass would be constructed and the traffic light would be removed. Dunkin' Donuts and Radio Shack now reside where the gas station is in this picture. To the right of the gas station was a Ford dealer.
