8th
Street

EIGHTH STREET over the years has expanded far beyond its original length, now running south to north, with a few major interruptions, from Morgan Boulevard to Pyne Point in North Camden.

In the early 1940s, during World War II the Chelton Terrace public housing project was built, with homes in the 2100 block of South Eight, between Chelton Avenue and the railroad tracks that run east from Broadway along Bulson Street. These homes were owned and operated by the Housing Authority of the City of Camden and were razed, then rebuilt in the 2000s.

Homes and business along Eighth Street between Van Hook Street and Ferry Avenue were razed in the early 1950s to make way for the Roosevelt Manor public housing project, also owned and operated by the Housing Authority of the City of Camden. Roosevelt Manor is slated for demolition in late 2004 and 2005, and new construction took place, which was mostly completed by the spring of 2010.

Do you have a EIGHTH Street memory or picture. Let me know by e-mail so it can be included here.

I remember Mr. Austermuhl of 740 State St. and Mr. Dalton of Dalton's Pharmacy on the NW corner of 8th and State. The store on the NE corner of 8th and State used to be a milk store.

On the SW corner of 8th and Vine Street, was another drugstore, complete with soda fountain. It was the old typical green metal exterior
with the big Coca-Cola circle emblems. I used to get my candy there.

I used to live at 718 N. 8th Street in Camden. My father, Warren Ash, bought the house in the 50's from a Mr. Welch. I was born in 1955. My mother's name was Georgia Ash and I have one younger sister, Diana. We lived there until 1967, I believe.

I have seen pictures of 718 on the web and it isn't pretty. I can see through the old bathroom window and see light, which means the walls between the bathroom, the back bedroom and the outside wall are open or missing. Looks like a fire may have burned out the place. I was by there in the seventies and someone was still living there. The photo is my sister  and I, Christmas day, 1964.

My Grandfather, Warren S. Ash, bought and owned the Matlack & Sons hardware store at 701 N. 8th Street. 703 N. 8th Street was also a part of the hardware store. Downstairs at 703 was the business office and my Grandfather lived upstairs of both 701 and 703.

My Grandfather moved the hardware business further downtown to an old Packard dealership. He stopped selling to the public and dealt with schools and businesses. .This was before the riots in 68. I forget the town he moved his home to.

YOUTH SNATCHES HANDBAG

Mrs. Anna Beachwood, of 524 North Eighth street, reported to Acting Detective Harry Kyler her handbag was snatched by a youth as she was walking with a woman friend on Seventh street near Fern last night. The thief ran east on Fern street. Radio car squads searched the neighborhood. Mrs. Beachwood said the bag contained about $1 in change.

Fine or Jail Term Ordered To Make Bootleg Buyer Talk
Reveal Rum Source or Else, is New Rule of Police Court
2 Wilkie Nabbed Are Among First 'Victims'

Unless they tell where they bought it, drinkers of bootleg liquor arrested by Camden police  henceforth will receive the full penalty of $200 fine or 90 days in jail, Police Judge Lewis Liberman  decided yesterday.

The new policy of getting to the bootleg seller through the bootleg drinker was announced by Judge Liberman when he imposed maximum sentences on two men arrested by Acting Detective John V.  Wilkie at Eighth and Cooper streets last night.

The men were Albert Waite, 29, of 916 Pearl street, and John Barrett, 34, of 237 North Eighth street. In the latter's pocket, Wilkie said he found a half pint of "white mule."

Barrett refused to tell Wilkie where he brought it, so in a pre-hearing conference with Judge Liberman and Court Clerk Edward Smith, it was decided to give Waite and Barrett, originally arrested as just drunk and disorderly, a trial on the more serious charge of possessing illicit liquor. If Barrett gets a change of heart and names the seller, his sentence later will be suspended, said the judge.

"This is a fine idea to make the purchasers of illegal whiskey tell where they got the stuff," said the  judge. "There will be mighty few willing to pay $200 or spend three months in jail rather than tell on a  speakeasy.

VACUUM CLEANER SALE SENDS SELLER TO CELL

Accused of fraud in connection with the sale of a vacuum cleaner, Leonard Hauser, 39, of 218 North
Eighth street
, yesterday was arrested and held on $1000 bail for a hearing Monday in Camden police court.

Complaint against Hauser were Mrs. Mary Kirby, of 552 Bailey street, and Frank Thompson, dealer in
vacuum cleaners at Fifth and Cooper streets.

Hauser allegedly sold Mrs. Kirby a machine, taking her old one in exchange. When she complained the new one did not work, according to the complaint, Hauser took it and failed to return it, or the $25 he collected.

George Dunkle, aged 3 years of 913 Mt. Ephraim Avenue, was attacked and badly bitten on the face by a pet fox terrier yesterday. Considered a pet, the dog had just been teased by an older member of the family when the child tried to pick it up. Then it was that it turned on George, badly tearing his face. The wound was cauterized by Dr. Miller, of Eight & Mt. Vernon Streets.

AUTO GUNMEN LOSE STREET BATTLE HERE
Fire Five Shots, But Fail to Hit Man at Eighth and Chestnut

Three gunmen in a speeding automobile opened fire last night on an unknown victim near Eighth and Chestnut Streets and escaped before arrival of police.

Apparently no one was injured by the fire of the gangsters and police were unable to learn at whom the bullets were directed.

Five empty 12-gauge shotgun shells were found in the street after the gunmen had fled.

According to a meager description furnished police by pedestrians, several of whom narrowly escaped being hit by the bullets, the car containing the gunmen bore Pennsylvania license plates and was a closed sedan.

Two of the men were in the rear seat, each holding what appeared to be a pump-gun.

The description of the car was broadcast over the state police teletype system and a police net was thrown about the city, but no arrests had been made early today.

Joseph & Margaret Cline, circa 1918

The Clines lived at 1721 Fillmore Street through 1924. Not all of Joseph M. & Margaret Cline's children were born while the family lived at the Fillmore Street address. The family had moved by the time the 1927 City Directory was compiled, they are not, however listed in that directory, so it is uncertain as to whether they had moved to 1700 South 8th Street by the time that directory was compiled..
