Camden People - Nathan WIne Jr.

NATHANIEL WINSTON WINE JR. was born on June 8, 1896 to Nathaniel W. Wine and the former Mary Angelo. He was the second child, coming after Adelbert and before Anna, Donald, Harry and Walter. The 1910 Census shows the family on Hanover Street in Philadelphia.

Nathan Wine married Charlotte Martina Hollerman on May 31, 1914 in Wilmington, Delaware.

The 1915 Census shows the family living at 678 Bulson Street in Camden, New Jersey. By 1916 the family had moved to 743 Florence Street. He worked as an elevator operator, then found work at the McAndrew & Forbes licorice plant. The 1920 Census shows the family living at 749 Woodland Avenue, where they remained into 1929. Nathan Wine was still working at McAndrews and Forbes as late as 1922. In January of 1923 he was appointed to the Camden Police Department. Officer Wine was still serving as a Camden policeman as late as 1949.

The Wine family moved to was living at 837 Sylvan Street when the Census was taken in 1930 and 1940. By that time the family included children Paul, Thelma, Elmer, Elizabeth, and Doris Wine. By April of 1942 Nathan Wine was living at 675 Sylvan Street, He was still residing there when the 1947 Camden City Directory was compiled.

Nathan Wine passed away on July 9, 1962. He was survived by his wife and children.

WILKIE THREATENED BY EIGHT MEN IN AUTO

Search for a maroon-colored touring car believed by John V. Wilkie, Camden's
notebook cop," to contain eight beer runners was made yesterday after Wilkie had
been threatened by an occupant of the automobile while in his traffic booth at Baird
and Wilson boulevards.

The car containing the eight men, three in the front and five in the rear, was
proceeding northwest on Admiral Wilson boulevard when one of the occupants
uttered the threat against Wilkie.

"Come on out and fight; you ____” the stranger shouted. Wilkie said he placed
the light at amber and sought to learn the license number of the automobile. The
plates however, were indistinguishable, he said, or had been either smeared or
turned around to be unrecognizable.

Wilkie said he reported to police headquarters and that Major Charles V. Dickinson, deputy director of public safety, and Motorcycle Police Sergeant Jeff Kay and Policeman Nathan Wine searched and waited for hours for the return of the mysterious car without avail.
