LEROY HATCHETT was born in Petersburg, Virginia on November 25, 1891 to William and Daisy Hatchett. He was the second child, born after older sister Marie. Shortly after his birth the family came to New Jersey, where another sister, Florence, was borne in August of 1893. The Hatchetts were living in Wall, New Jersey, which is in Monmouth County, when the Census was enumerated in 1900. By 1900 Leroy Hatchett had gone out into the world. He was living in Glassboro, New Jersey when the Census was taken in 1900. He does not appear in the 1914 Camden City Directory, but was in the city by the spring of 1917.

Leroy Hatchett was unmarried and living with his mother and grandmother at 1100 South 8th Street when he registered for the draft on June 5, 1917. He served in the armed forces during World War I, and married upon his return. When the Census was taken in January of 1920 Leroy and Hazel Hatchett were living at 636 Sycamore Street.

On November 23, 1920 Leroy Hatchett was appointed to the Camden Fire Department. He was one of six Black firefighters hired when the Department was reintegrated. 

When the Census was taken in April of 1930 Leroy Hatchett and his wife Hazel were still living at 636 Sycamore Street in South Camden. The Hatchett's were childless at the time. They were still at that address in 1931. They moved to 721 Mount Vernon Street at some point during the 1930s, and are listed at that address in the 1940 City Directory. By the spring of 1942 Leroy Hatchett and family had moved to 1113 Marion Street. He had moved to 811 Pine Street by 1947.

Leroy Hatchett went out on pension on November 1, 1953. He was then still living at 811 Pine Street, and he remained at that address through at least the fall of 1970.  Hazel Hatchett died in August of 1968. Leroy Hatchett joined her in September of 1973.
