John
Vanhart

JOHN W. VANHART was born in March 1864 in New Jersey to Charles P. and Hannah "Ann" Vanhart. The family, which included younger sister Anna, lived at 427 Spruce Street when the Census was taken in 1880. Charles Vanhart was then working as a laborer, young John had already began working as a paperhanger, a trade he would follow until his appointment to the Camden Fire Department in 1899. The elder Vanhart soon went into business as a milk dealer. The family remained at 427 Spruce Street through 1882. The 1883-1884 Directories show the Vanharts at 511 Spruce Street. The family had moved to 580 Mt. Vernon Street by the time the 1884-1885 City Directory was compiled. Charles Vanhart had by then gone into business operating a grocery. The 1887-1888 and 1888-1889 City Directories lists John Vanhart living with his parents at 580 Mt. Vernon Street. His father was still in the grocery business at that address.

John Vanhart married his Ireland-born wife Ella around 1890. 1893-1894 City Directory shows John Vanhart at 1030 Line Street. The 1894-1895 and 1895-1896 City Directories reveal the Vanhart family at 1019 Penn Street by 1906.. The 1896 City Directory lists the Vanhart family at 1022 Linden Street. The 1898 Directory shows them at 314 North 10th Street, while the 1899 Directory gives an address of 316 North 10th Street, consistent with the 1900 Census.

John Vanhart was appointed to the Camden Fire Department on November 23, 1899.

According to the 1900 Census John and Ella Vanhart had two children born prior to 1900, sadly, only daughter Mary E. Vanhart was alive at the time of the census. He then made his home at 316 North 10th Street in what was then Camden's Second Ward. Not long afterward the family moved to 326 North 10th Street

John Vanhart died on April 23, 1903 and was buried at Evergreen Cemetery. His widow, Ella, had moved to 1005 Penn Street by 1906.
