Camden People - Herbert Richardson Sr.

HERBERT RICHARDSON SR. was born in Camden on February 23, 1891. He was the youngest of ten children born to Roxanne and Richard James Richardson. His grandparents were William David Richardson (1816-1865) and his wife, the former Celia Morrison. His father had for siblings, brothers Edward A. Richardson, whose wife Emma Miller Richardson became a physician and founded an orphanage in Camden and William D. Richardson (1842-1881); and sisters Helen Richardson Turner, and Mary Richardson

Richard J. Richardson and family lived at 566 Walnut Street during the 1880s and as late as 1890. By 1890 Richard J. Richardson had move to 1152 Marion Street in South Camden. By the spring of 1900 Richard J. Richardson had moved to 1118 Baring Street, just around the corner. Herbert Richardson's siblings who were at home in 1900 were Norwood, William, Edna, & Nellie. Four other children were not living at not at home, and one had died. The family was living at 574 Chestnut Street by 1910.

Herbert Richardson attended the Kaighn School and the Richard Fetters School, before graduating from Camden Manual Training & High School in 1909. After graduating from Temple University Law School in 1913, he embarked on a long and distinguished legal career. He was employed as a clerk in the office of Francis F. Patterson, Jr., Camden County Clerk, from 1910 to 1913 in the County Court House at Camden.

Herbert Richardson was a clerk at the court house by 21 Apr 21, 1910. On

September 15, 1913, Herbert Richardson was appointed sergeant-at-arms of the Chancery Court, Camden City, Camden County, NJ, serving under Vice Chancellor Edmund B. Leaming, Vice Chancellor Francis B. Davis, Vice Chancellor Albert S. Woodruff, Judge Norman T. Rogers and Judge Vincent S. Haneman.

On Wednesday, Oct 7, 1914, at age 23, Herbert Richardson married Rosita Sherwood Martin, age 22, at 424 Haddon Avenue, Camden. The 1914 City Directory shows Herbert Richardson living at 1304 Park Boulevard.

Herbert Richardson witnessed the will of Richard J. Richardson, his father, on April 30, 1915. Richard J. Richardson died the following year.

When Herbert Richardson registered for the draft on June 5, 1917 he was described as of medium height, slender, with blue eyes and brown hair. He was still employed as the Sergeant at Arms at State of New Jersey Chancery Court in Camden. By this time he and his wife lived at 1466 Kaighn Avenue in Parkside. When the Census was taken on January 19, 1920 he and his wife were residing at 1466 Kaighn Avenue with their children, Herbert Richardson Jr. and Martin G. Richardson, with Flora Bruggar listed as lodging in the household. The family owned their home; however, they did have a mortgage. Herbert Richardson was still employed as sergeant at arms in the court house.

Herbert Richardson Sr. was admitted to the bar as an Attorney in 1922. He was attached to Vice-Chancellor Leaming's Court on April 1, 1923 at Camden. He was a Counselor-at-Law in 1925 and taught Equity Pleading and the Law of Mortgages during the early days at South Jersey Law School.

When the Census was again enumerated, in April of 1930, Herbert Richardson Sr., his wife, Rosita, and their children, Herbert Jr., George Martin, Joan Rosita, and John Townsend Richardson were still living at 1466 Kaighn Avenue in Camden's Parkside neighborhood. The family then owned their home, which was valued at eight thousand dollars. They also possessed a radio. Herbert Richardson Sr. by this time was an attorney with his own law office on 3 Apr 1930.

Herbert Richardson Sr. was appointed a Special Master in Chancery Court in 1936.

On April 27, 1942 Herbert Richardson Sr. registered for the draft. He was a self-employed attorney at the West Jersey Trust Building in Camden. He was still living at 1466 Kaighn Avenue. By 1947 he had moved his office to 525 Cooper Street and his home to 300 Washington Avenue in Haddonfield, New Jersey. Herbert Richardson retired from the practice of law in 1951.

Besides his legal career, Herbert Richardson served as church organist at various times at a number of churches, including the Church of Our Savior and St. John's Episcopal Church, both on Broadway in Camden. He was a member of Parkside Lodge 217, Free & Accepted Masons. Herbert Richardson was also active in Camden with Camden Lodge 293, Benevolent Protective Order of Elks. He was a twice elected exalted ruler of the Camden lodge.

Herbert Richardson passed away on December 13, 1957 at Cooper Hospital in Camden.

MARTIN SUSPENDED BY JUDGE VARBALOW
Sergeant-at-Arms Accused of 'Holding Up' Order Issued by Court

Edward Martin, sergeant-at-arms in the Camden District Court, has been suspended by Judge Joseph Varbalow on charges that he attempted to hold up a court order, and used profane language in a public office.

The suspension is indefinite, Judge Varbalow said, until he "turns the matter over to see if any further punishment should be given. Martin had no comment to make when questioned on the suspension.

Judge Varbalow said the charges arose over a case in his court involving Frank Schofield and James Pennington. The former had obtained an attachment on funds of Pennington, who is leader of an orchestra known as Pennington's Californians.

"When the case came up for a hearing in my court," Judge Varbalow said, "Schofield, who was the plaintiff, failed to appear. I then I signed an order directing the clerk of the court to return the money held up in the attachment, to Pennington.

" Martin acted as a constable in the matter. He went to the clerk, Charles Ferat, and told him to hold up the order for an hour or so, until he, Martin, could get in touch with Schofield's counsel, Rudolph Eisener," Judge Varbalow continued.

"Ferat refused to hold up the order, and Martin called him a profane name. The matter was reported to me and I summoned Martin, Ferat and two other witnesses to my office on Saturday.

"At that time Martin admitted he had made a mistake and said he was sorry it had happened. He said he meant no wrong by his actions.

"I have suspended Martin for two reasons. First, because no sergeant-at-arms has the power to hold up a court order and second, because he was engaged in an argument in a public office, during which he used profane language”.

Herbert Richardson, counsel for Martin, would not discuss the case today. "I don't know what it is all about as yet, so naturally I have nothing to say. I feel that the matter will straighten itself out," Richardson said.
