Camden People - Daniel J. Grimes

DANIEL J. GRIMES was born in Pennsylvania around 1863 to Christopher Grimes and his wife, the former Catherine Hennessey. At the age of 19 he married Elizabeth Lee, who was two years his senior. The Grimes family came to New Jersey in the mid-1890s. By 1900 the family was living at 586 Auburn Street, with four children at home, Margaret, 10; Richard, 9; Rose, 5; and Daniel Jr., 2 years of age.

Daniel Grimes served as a member of the Camden Fire Department for 32 years and nine months. He joined the department on March 1, 1900 and retired on December 30, 1932. During the 1910s he was assigned to Engine Company No. 5 at 14th and Federal Streets.

As early as 1906 and through at least 1924, Daniel and Elizabeth Grimes lived at 623 Vine Street in North Camden. By 1920 Daughter Rose was still at home, but had married Clarence Wurst, who wasn't the boy next door, but was the boy two doors away, at 617 Vine street. They remained at that address through at least 1924. The 1927 Camden City Directory shows the Grimes family living at 715 North 10th Street. By 1929 they had Grimes family had moved to 3216 Saunders Street in East Camden. His neighbor at 3218 was a brother fire fighter, Nicholas Romaine. Camden policeman Ralph Cline lived just around the corner at 379 North 33rd Street. The Grimes family was still on Saunders Street in April of 1930. By 1931 he, wife Elizabeth and son Richard had moved to 2823 Pleasant Street. Fire Department records from 1931 show that Richard Grimes had become a Camden firefighter. Richard Grimes passed away on December 11, 1932. Daniel Grimes retired from the department at the end of the month.

Daniel Grimes last residence was at 973 North Twenty-seventh street. He passed away on June 6, 1933 at the age of 70 and was buried at Calvary Cemetery in Delaware Township (present-day Cherry Hill), New Jersey.

Engine Company No. 5 at 14th and Federal Streets, with newly converted hose wagon. Originally a horse drawn rig, it was modified to electric power by the Commercial Truck Company of Philadelphia PA. A storage battery powered each wheel.

GRIMES FUNERAL TO BE HELD SATURDAY

The funeral of Daniel J. Grimes, 66, veteran city fireman, who died Tuesday night in Cooper Hospital, will be held at 7:30 a.m. Saturday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Clarence Wurst, 326 Elm street.

Mr. Grimes was taken to Cooper Hospital a week ago after several weeks illness at home, 973 North Twenty-seventh street.

He entered the fire department March 1, 1900, and retired last December 30. He was a member of the Elks, Eleventh Ward Republican Club and the Police and Firemen's Benevolent Association. His widow, Elizabeth, also survives.

Requiem mass will be celebrated at Holy Name Church, Fifth and Vine streets, at 9 a. m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. .
