Camden People - Agnes Draper

AGNES DRAPER was born in 1876, the daughter of Professor Horatio and Eleanor Draper. Horatio Draper was the first principal of the Camden Manual Training and High School, later known as Burrough Junior High School. He also was the superintendent of schools for the city in the 1890s. The Draper family lived at 582 Clinton Street in the late 1880s and early 1890s. Horatio Draper was the principal of the Fetters school, and when the High School was organized in 1891, he was its first principal.

Agnes Draper, after graduating from Camden High School and the Camden Normal School in 1897, began teaching second grade at the Bergen School in 1909. She was sent to the Read School in North Camden in 1922, then to Broadway Elementary School in 1923. At the time of the 1930 census, she lived at 210 East Maple Avenue in nearby Merchantville NJ. She later moved back to Camden. In 1940 Miss Draper was again transferred, this time to the Liberty School. She became an auxiliary teacher at the Cooper School, and although ill was hoping to return to the classroom for the 1950-51 school year, when she passed away on July 6, 1950.

Agnes Draper last resided at 305 Cooper Street in Camden NJ. A member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Camden, she was, after funeral services at the Wallace M. DuBois funeral home at 418 Chambers Street, buried at Harleigh Cemetery in Camden. Her life spent teaching young children in the Camden school system, Agnes Draper left no survivors, but many friends and former students.
