David A. Young

PRIVATE DAVID A. YOUNG was born in 1921 in New Jersey to Edward L. and Nellie Young, of 1011 Grant Avenue in Collingswood NJ. He was the youngest of at least seven children, coming after Viola, Walter P., Evelyn W., Thomas P., Edward L. Jr., and Ruth Young. His father worked as a cabinetmaker at the time of the 1920 census. Edward L. Young Sr. was born in 1864, and was 18 years his wife's senior. He passed away prior to the April 1930 census. David Young attended Collingswood High School, as a member of the 1941 class, but did not complete his education there, leaving school after his junior year. He worked as a wood patternmaker prior to being drafted.

David Young was received his call for the draft into the United States Army on January 2, 1943, and was inducted on February 2, 1943. He went overseas as a member of a postal unit. He was transferred to the infantry in 1944, when the need for replacements became such that support units were mobilized.

On December 20, 1944 Private Young was reported to have been taken prisoner by German forces. He died of malnutrition while a prisoner at Stalag 9B near Bad Orb, north of Frankfurt, Germany on March 12, 1945. at the age of 23. David Young was brought home in the fall of 1948, and buried at Harleigh Cemetery in Camden NJ on December 11th of that year.
